How to Recover a Forgotten Mac Password without Losing Data

It is very common that you may forget the password of your Mac. Which may lead you to not have access to your Mac. You can reset it to Factory Default but in that case you’ll loose your data. So, How to Recover a Forgotten Mac Password without Losing Data?

It is pretty common that the data on your Mac is very important for you. And in any case, you would want to get your data back. The way you can skip that hassle is by taking a backup of your Mac on regular bases. You can either manually copy the data or use TimeMachine.

What is TimeMachine?

TimeMachine is a feature of MacOS which allows you to take complete backup of your Mac on regular bases. It is a automated system, where-in you need to just select a dedicated drive for Back-ups and the software will backup your Mac’s data regularly. The frequency of back-ups is after every few hours.

This ensures safety of your data and a secure backup. So, in case you delete a file by mistake, you can go back in time with TimeMachine and get the back. It is a very helpful feature. The layout of the feature is very similar looking to a TimeMachine. It takes you back in time and helps you browse your data.

You can also manually open your Drive and check the data. So, in case you aren’t able to use the TimeMachine Restore Option, you can go to Finder and open the Drive. Here you can browse your data and copy and paste it to your MacOS Drive.

How to Recover a Forgotten Mac Password without Losing Data?

Now moving ahead, you need to ensure you’ve a working internet connection. The entire process is simple, you need to enter few commands and you should get access to your Mac back without losing any data. In case the commands do not work at first, you need to make multiple attempts and it shall work for you.

Method – 1 : Reset Password

Under this method, with help of Root access in the terminal, we shall reset the password of your account and regain access.

Step 1 : Shut Down your Mac

Step 2 : Press Command + S and Turn ON your Mac

Step 3 : Now, you should have the root access. Enter “mount -uw /” and hit the return key

Step 4 : Now enter “ls /Users” and hit the return key

Step 5 : Enter “dscl . -passwd /Users/[username] [password]” (Replace username with your respective account username and password with the new password you want to set)

Step 6 : Type “reboot” and hit the return key

Step 7 : After your Mac reboots, enter the new password set by you

When you enter the new password, you should have access to your Mac. However, in case this method doesn’t work for you, try it once again. Even after the second attempt if it doesn’t work, try the second method.

Method – 2 : Create a new Admin Account

In this method, we shall gain the root access and create a new Admin Account. By accessing the newly created Admin Account, we shall reset the password of the old Admin Account and regain access.

Step 1 : Shut Down your Mac

Step 2 : Press Command + S and Turn ON your Mac

Step 3 : Enter “mount -uw /” and hit the return key

Step 4 : Now enter, “rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone” and hit the return key

Step 5 : Type “shutdown -h now” and hit the return key

Step 6 : Turn ON your Mac and continue the set-up process

Step 7 : Once you’ve created a new user account, go to System Preferences > Users & Groups

Step 8 : Tap on your old user account and hit Reset Password

Step 9 : Enter the new password and hit Change Password

Step 10 : Log out from the new user account & log-in to the old user account

Note : Once you’ve access to your user account, you can delete the new user account from System Preferences > Users & Groups

Now you should have access to your old user account and non of your data is lost.
