How to put your iPhone or iPad into DFU mode

How to put your iPhone XR, XS, or XS Max into DFU mode

Step 1 : Plug your iPhone Xr or Xs into your computer via Lightening Cable

Step 2 : Turn Off your iPhone, if it’s not already off (You need to press and hold the power button on the right side and once you see Slide to Power Off, slide over it to turn off your iPhone)

Step 3 : Once the iPhone is turned off, you need to press and hold the side Power Button for 3 seconds

Step 4 : Now, press and hold the volume down button on the left side

Step 5 : Press and hold both the buttons for 10 second (If you see the Apple Logo, it means you have pressed the buttons for too long. Turn On/Off your iPhone and try again)

Step 6 : Now, release the side Power Button and continue holding volume down button for 5 seconds.

Step 7 : iTunes now should give you a pop-up, detected a new iPhone in DFU Mode. (If you get – Plug into iTunes sign, you need to try the entire process again)

The timings can get a little annoying part but in the second or third attempt you should be able to put your iPhone into DFU Mode. Now, you can easily go ahead and downgrade your iPhone’s iOS version as iBoot is skipped in DFU Mode. iBoot is what helps iPhone to detect and now allow firmware downgrading when iPhone is up and running.

How to put your iPad Pro 2018 into DFU mode

In the latest model of iPad Pro, released in 2018, Apple has removed the home button. Replacing it with Face ID and making the iPad smarter than before. But with the same did change the method of entering DFU Mode. Unlike other iPhones (older generations) the method to put iPad Pro 2018 into DFU Mode is different. It is very similar to iPhone X series. Just you need to be sure of which iPad model / version you own. Let’s check it out.

Step 1 : Plug your iPad Pro into your computer via Lightening Cable

Step 2 : Turn Off your iPad, if it’s not already off (Press and Hold the One/Off Button and Slide to Power Off)

Step 3 : Once the iPad is turned off, you need to press the On/Off Button and hold it for 3 seconds

Step 4 : On the 4th second, press the volume down button and hold both the buttons pressed for 10 more seconds. (But if you see the Apple Logo at this stage, you need to start over al again)

Step 5 : Now you can release the On/Off Button and continue holding volume down button for 5 seconds more.

Step 6 : iTunes now should give you a pop-up, which means your iPad Pro is in DFU Mode. Also you’ll be able to see a black screen on your iPad (If you get – Plug into iTunes sign, you need to try the entire process again)

How to put your iPhone 8, or iPhone X into DFU mode

Since these are the older generation iPhones, the method is a little different. Apple did add new gestures for SOS emergency, which changed things a little. Also, there is a Home Button on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, but it isn’t a physical button. It’s just a haptic touch.

Step 1 : Plug your iPhone 8 or X into your computer or Mac using a Lightening Cable

Step 2 : Start iTunes and check if it detects your iPhone

Step 3 : Turn Off your iPhone now

Step 4 : Now, press the Power Button on the right side and hold for 3 seconds

Step 5 : After which, you need to press the volume down button at the left side of your iPhone and hold for 10 seconds.

Step 6 : In case, you see the Apple Logo, it means you have pressed the buttons for too long. Turn On/Off your iPhone and try again

Step 7 : Now, release the side Power Button and continue holding volume down button for 5 seconds more.

Step 8 : Once you see the black screen on your iPhone, you’re into DFU Mode (If you get – Plug into iTunes sign, you need to try the entire process again)

How to put your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus into DFU mode

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have a similar problem like the iPhone 8. Because again on iPhone 7 you do not get a physical home button, you only get haptic feedbacks. So, the method for putting iPhone 7 or 7 Plus into DFU Mode is similar to that of iPhone 8.

How to put your iPhone 6s or earlier iPhone, iPad (with Home Button) and iPod Touch into DFU mode

Here is where everything changed. The older generation products from Apple did have a physical home button as well as power button. So, it was very easy to enter into DFU Mode. However, if you miss on the timings, you will have to repeat the process.

Step 1 : Connect your iPhone, or iPad, or iPod Touch to your computer or Mac

Step 2 : Check they are detected in iTunes

Step 3 : Turn it off, press and hold the power button and Slide to Power Off

Step 4 : Now, once your iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch if off, press the power button and hold it for 3 seconds

Step 5 : After which you need to press the home button and hold both the buttons for 10 seconds more (If you see the Apple logo here, you need to start again)

Step 6 : On the 11th second, release the power button and continue holding the home button for 5 more seconds

Step 7 : When you see the black screen on your iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch, this is it. You’re into DFU Mode. (In place of the black screen, if you see the sign to Plug into iTunes, you need to start again)

That is it. That is the exact method you need to follow for your respective Apple Product and get into DFU Mode. It not only will help you to downgrade your iPhone’s firmware but also to restore without turning off Find my iPhone or signing out from Apple ID.
