Apple now has another Patent for Foldable Display. The company shall mostly use this for the upcoming foldable iPhone.
Apple has been working on foldable iPhones since years now, and this year as well the company used at most a flexible display with iPhone X, Xs and Xs Max. Due to the edge-to-edge design, the iPhones have a flexible LED display-panel.
Apple Granted Patent for Folding iPhone
With this Patent being granted, company can potentially use it for an iPhone which can turn into a size of an iPad Mini. It will be quite interesting to know more about the same in the coming future.
Apple planned earlier this year to go ahead along with LG for the building of foldable iPhones rather than Samsung as the company itself has plans for foldable phone and display and Apple doesn’t want any leaks for this upcoming iPhone.
Some snapshot from the Patent that has been granted, however it is in a complex language:
Electronic devices may be provided that contain multiple housing portions. The housing portions may be coupled together using hinges. The hinges may include hinges based on a three-bar linkage, hinges based on a four-bar linkage, hinges with slotted members, hinges formed from flexible support structures, and hinges based on flexible housing structures. Flexible displays may be mounted to the housing portions overlapping the hinges. When the housing portions in a device are rotated relative to each other, the flexible display may bend. The hinge may be configured to allow the flexible display to be placed in a front-to-front configuration in which an active side of the display faces itself or a back-to-back configuration. Engagement structures may be used to help the housing grip external objects and to hold the housing portions together. The hinges may be provided with rotational detents to help hold the flexible display in desired positions.
Apple Launching Folding iPhone Soon?
It has been the case with Apple that in the case of Patents, it likes to cover everything. Even tough it never makes a potential commercial product out of it, it does like to take up the Patent for the design. This year as well, the design shows a book-folding like shape with the display towards the outside of the structure.
We have seen many android devices trying to come-up with an curved and folding display, being the manager one from Samsung. It published a concept video back in 2013 which showed the potential folding Samsung Phone. This year also, in September the company came up with something similar and claims to disclose the details during it’s Developer Conference in November. This also can be an interesting to know what Samsung has to offer, as the company tried to distract customers from this year’s iPhone line-up but didn’t turn out well for Samsung.
